Sgt. Viviana Vasquez

My name is Viviana Vasquez and I am currently a Sergeant with the University of Texas Permian Basin Police Department.  I was born and raised in Permian Basin.  I began my interest in law enforcement while employed with the city of Odessa as a 911 dispatcher.  I quickly realized I wanted to be on the other end of the situation helping those who cannot help themselves.  I attended the Odessa Police Department Academy where I graduated 2nd in my class and was the first ever female to receive the “Top Gun” award for marksmanship.  I was a Police Officer at Odessa College Police Department for six years.  While there, I received a Life Saving award.  I was also one of the coordinators for Odessa Crime Stoppers Odessa College division.  I was hired with the UTPB Police Department in January of 2020.  I was promoted to FTO shortly after.  I received letters of commendation from my Sergeants for my work ethic and performance.  I was then appointed as the UTPB Crime Stopper Coordinator under Odessa Crime Stoppers.  I was promoted to patrol Sergeant in February of 2022 for Patrol Division A.  I currently have an Associates in Applied Science for Criminal Justice and plan to further my education as I have nearly completed all the necessary credits to obtain my Bachelors Degree.

I am a married mother of four wonderful children, one of which is currently employed by UTPB PD as a dispatcher while she attends college.  With everything that I do, my only goal in life is to set a good example for my children.  I have many role models who have inspired me and helped shape me into the Officer I am today.  Growing up, I was given an amazing childhood that instilled in me that regardless of who you are, you can achieve whatever you set your mind to.  This coupled with my amazing support system at home has afforded me the opportunity to have gotten as far in my career as I have.

I am honored to have been chosen for this award and it serves as a reminder to never become complacent and always do your best to bring pride, respect, and honor to the badge and this profession.  If I could give one piece of advice to anyone in this field, it would be to work hard and always go home at night knowing you gave the job, the citizens, and your partners the best version of yourself.
