Marcus Williams, UT Health Science Center San Antonio - Featured Officer of the Month

Marcus Williams

My interest in law enforcement was cultivated by Major Darrell Chism a member of the Kansas City Police Department.  I remember while in middle school talking to him as he assisted on a school project I was assigned.  I could tell that he had a love and passion for what he did, and he passed on to me that with the job came great responsibility.  I knew then that I would never take for granted any opportunity I would be given in my career.  Sadly, he passed away the week after I graduated from the UT System Police Academy in December 2007.  I would have liked to have shared my ups and downs of my career with him as the years passed.

Born and raised in San Antonio to military parents serving in the United States Air Force I would go on to graduate from Sam Houston State University with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice and a minor in Psychology in 2006.  Upon graduating I was hired on as a guard (now called Public Safety Officer) before becoming a cadet in the police academy.  In my first year as a police officer, I was deployed to UTMB Galveston after Hurricane Ike had swept through.  Some of the officers effected by the hurricane I was just in the academy with the year prior.  I was a member of the department’s color guard for three years, participating at sporting events like the San Antonio Spurs and San Antonio Rampage games.  I was also fortunate to participate in university events like 9/11 remembrance ceremony.  In 2012 I became a background investigator for the department completing backgrounds for civilian personnel, police officers, and telecommunicators.

In September 2012 I was promoted to Patrol Sergeant where I had the opportunity to supervise a great group of officers that made the transition into the supervisory position easier than if it was without them.  I learned a lot from them and the officers that followed that joined my shift.  While a sergeant I was able to still conduct background investigations, train new officers, and become a RAD Basic Women’s Self-Defense Instructor.  In 2016 I became a CRASE (Civilian Response to Active Shooter Event) instructor. In August 2018 I was promoted to Patrol Lieutenant where I currently serve.

I am currently attending Tarleton State University working on a Master of Public Administration with an expected graduation date of December 2019.   I have enjoyed my career at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio PD and look forward to what is to come.
