My name is Hector Luevano Jr. I have been with the University of Texas at Austin for 8 ½ years. I am currently acting Lieutenant for our Public Order Division. I’m originally from Southwest Texas (Uvalde), and graduated from Texas State University. Go Bobcats. My career in the department started in 2012 where I started night shift on patrol. I was certified to patrol on bike and never looked back since then. Any chance to patrol on bike I was out riding. After a couple years on nights, an opportunity for a full time bike unit came up and I was selected to be on the team. Working downtown on bike 40hrs a week has been one of the best times in my career so far. I have been involved with arrests with major drug deal operations to the positive day to day community outreach. The experience in working with Austin Police Department and Texas Highways Patrol with downtown operations from protests of 15 people to 15,000 people, overnight downtown initiatives in working together to keep our community safe from the gun violence has been an experience. After those 3 years on bike I promoted to Sergeant and went back to nights with the Bravo 300 Unit at the time. Working nights as a supervisor with the University of Austin being downtown also brought with it a lot of experience. I have been an instructor for IPMBA since 2015 and have helped smaller municipal agencies around the area set up a bike program. I’m also a part of the Crisis Negotiation Team. The first year of competition in 2018 our team placed 2nd at the Texas State Crisis Negotiations competition held in San Marcos TX. Our team competed against local, state, and federal agencies and departments across the country and international teams as well. In 2019 I was recipient of the Supervisor of the Year.
I am thankful for the privilege to work for a department that is forward thinking and seeks out ways to engage our community in working together to make a difference.
