Application Requirements

To be considered for the Texas Legislative Fellowship Program, applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:

Minimum Eligibility

  • Be a currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate student at a University of Texas System institution.
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Undergraduate applicants must have completed both Texas government core curriculum courses.

 

Application Materials

A complete application includes:

Resume

A one-page professional resume. Applicants are strongly encouraged to use the provided resume template. Applicants should also have their resume reviewed by a campus career services office before submission.

Unofficial Transcript

A PDF copy of your unofficial academic transcript from your UT System institution. If you are applying during your first semester at a UT System institution, also include an unofficial transcript from your most recent academic institution where you completed coursework. 

Personal Statement (Max. 500 words)

In a personal statement of 500 words or less, explain why you want to participate in the UT System Texas Legislative Fellowship Program. Please include:

  • A specific experience, issue, or moment that sparked your interest in the Texas legislative process.
  • A reflection on one academic or professional experience that prepared you for this opportunity.
  • An example of how you’ve built community or fostered collaboration across differences, and how you’ll contribute to the fellowship cohort.
Policy Memo (500 words)

A brief, well-researched policy paper that identifies a key policy issue facing the state of Texas. The memo should be directed to a relevant state official or legislative committee that would have the ability or authority to address the policy problem. The policy memo should include supporting evidence and be formatted using MLA or APA citation style.

Recommendations

Provide contact information (email and phone) for two professional references. At least one must be a faculty member who can speak to your academic ability, character, and potential.
(Note: Teaching assistants and graduate assistants do not qualify as faculty recommenders.)
