Prospective Students - Frequently Asked Questions

What types of internships can I pursue as a fellow?

Fellows in the Texas Legislative Fellowship Program are required to complete a full-time, in-person internship with a member of the Texas Legislature or a state agency. The internship must take place in Austin, TX during the 90th Legislative Session, which runs from January 12, 2027, through May 31, 2027. Part-time internships and internships with organizations outside of state government are not eligible.

Will I receive academic credit for completing the program?

Fellows may be eligible to receive academic credit through their home UT System institution. Some institutions have a structured curriculum for legislative fellows that includes internship credit. In other cases, students may need to enroll in an internship or experiential learning course. Students should work with both the Texas Legislative Fellowship Program staff and their campus coordinator to confirm requirements. Fellows are responsible for their own enrollment and are strongly encouraged to finalize all coursework arrangements before the fellowship begins.

Is housing provided or do I need to arrange my own housing?

Housing is not provided. Fellows are responsible for arranging their own accommodations in Austin. If you are relocating for the session, please note that you may need to furnish your living space.

Do fellows receive any financial aid or support?

Fellows may be eligible to receive a cost-of-living stipend of up to $10,000 from the Texas Legislative Fellowship Program. Eligibility may be affected by factors such as other financial aid, cost of attendance, and tax implications. Accepting the stipend cannot cause a student’s total aid to exceed their UT System institution’s cost of attendance. Students are strongly encouraged to consult with Texas Legislative Fellowship Program staff, their campus coordinator, and their financial aid office if they have questions.

How long does the fellowship last?

The fellowship runs from January 4, 2027, through June 1, 2027. Fellows must be in Austin by Monday, January 4, 2027, for program orientation. Internships begin by Tuesday, January 12 and continue through Monday, May 31, 2027. The program concludes with a closing event on Tuesday, June 1, 2027.
