I believe that studying art, archaeology, and material culture has the potential to dramatically affect a student’s appreciation and understanding of various societies and their forms of expression.
In my Mesoamerican courses, in particular, I find that thinking about how things were in the ancient past is a powerful way to think, too, about how things are today. One of the most rewarding moments is when a student realizes that he or she has the power to contribute to the on-going discoveries, debates, and dialogues that are at the heart of how we construct history.
