The sacred human body taught my students volumes that I could not teach in a classroom.
The presence of a sick child and their family naturally cloaked me in compassion, a feeling I found difficult to recreate with few bullet points of a PowerPoint presentation. The total surrender of one’s body and life in my hands made me blind to the color of the skin or the faltering English. It is this sacred bondage I strive for with the patient and the family that I want my students to emulate.
