Meet Gustavo Villarreal!

Headshot for Gustavo Villarreal

What is your home institution?

University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston

How long have you been with UT-HIP?

3+ years

Where are you located?

Houston, Texas

What inspired you to join the team?

I was really drawn to the vision and potential of UT-HIP. It’s a statewide initiative focused on helping UT System health institutions improve patient outcomes and advance research—which ultimately means improving patient lives across Texas. With the right conditions, I truly believe there’s no other data platform or team in the state that can have as much impact on patient care as we can.

What is your favorite thing about working with UT-HIP?
Definitely the people and the culture we’ve built. Even as we’ve grown and faced some challenges along the way, we’ve remained a strong team. There’s a shared sense of purpose—we’re aligned in our vision, committed to those we serve, and willing to adapt as things evolve.
What is your role and how do you support UT-HIP?

I’m a Clinical Data Scientist on the UT-HIP Quality team. Our group focuses on facilitating quality collaboratives that help unify and strengthen improvement efforts across UT System health institutions. In my role, I support our collaborators by building impactful clinical data models and generating system-level insights that can help scale improvement efforts. Right now, I’m primarily focused on our UT-MOST program (UT Managing and Optimizing Sepsis Treatment), which aims to improve sepsis care across the state.
