2024 Year in Review

Across the 14 academic and health institutions of The University of Texas System, 2024 was a milestone year, as we expanded and enhanced our mission to serve Texans through affordable, accessible, high-quality education, world-changing research and discovery, and forward-thinking, compassionate health care.

This year saw historic growth, innovation and collaboration between the 14 academic and health institutions of The University of Texas System. Here are some highlights from a year filled with success and opportunity.

UT Permain Basin

UTPB was recognized for half a century of service to first-generation students by The Center for First-generation Student Success.

February

 

UT Southwestern Medical Center

UTSW announced plans to partner with Children’s Health to create a new, 33-acre children’s hospital and health campus to help meet fast-growing DFW’s skyrocketing needs for pediatric care, research.

March

 

Stephen F. Austin State University

The newest institution in the UT System, Stephen F. Austin State University, welcomed its 11th president, Dr. Neal Weaver.

April

 

The Trauma Research and Combat Casualty Care Collaborative

The UT System’s Trauma Research and Combat Care Collaborative (TRC4) awarded more than $18 million in research grants across UT institutions to advance care for traumatic injuries in military and civilian populations.

UT El Paso

UTEP launched UTEP Health to address the urgent need for health care professionals in the Paseo del Norte region.

 

UT San Antonio

UTSA is prepared to take on digital challenges of the future with the creation of a new college focused on artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, computing and data science.

 

UT Tyler

Dr. Julie Philley became the President of The University of Texas at Tyler. An East Texas native and the first woman to take on the role, she announced her intent to focus on quality health care, regional economic impact and academic growth.

UT Health Science Center at San Antonio

World class healthcare in San Antonio is expanding with the opening of the UT Health San Antonio Multispecialty and Research Hospital, a cutting-edge facility that’s setting a new standard for care and innovation.

July

 

UT Medical Branch

UTMB researchers revealed a new nasal spray that targets a toxic protein in the brain, offering a breakthrough in Alzheimer’s treatment with a single-dose therapy that can improve memory function and support care for neurodegenerative diseases.

August

 

UT Arlington

UT Arlington unveiled its plans for a new UTA West campus in fast-growing West Fort Worth, designed to serve more than 10,000 students, boosting access to education and fueling the local economy with workforce-ready talent.

 

UTSA and UT Health Science Center San Antonio

In a historic announcement, UTSA and UT Health San Antonio unveiled plans to combine into a single comprehensive research university, boasting 40,000 students, $467M in research, and top-tier innovation across fields like engineering, data science and healthcare.

 

UT System Athletes

Athletes from UT institutions kept up their winning tradition, taking the Olympic podium by storm with 21 medals – including 9 gold – at the Summer Games in Paris.

The UT Center at Laredo

The UT Education and Research Center at Laredo celebrated three years of bringing together UT institutions from across the state, announcing added offerings from UTMB, UT Rio Grande Valley and System-wide Texas Credentials for the Future initiative.

 

UT Health Science Center - Houston

UTHealth Houston cut the ribbon on a new, modern facility for its School of Public Health in Austin, that is designed to boost public health innovation and local partnerships in Central Texas.

UT Dallas

UTD took the spotlight with the opening of the first phase of the new Edith and Peter O’Donnell Jr. Athenaeum, accelerating the university’s emergence as a world class cultural destination with a bold and flourishing focus on the arts.

UT MD Anderson Cancer center

The world’s leading cancer center launched a new Institute for Cell Therapy Discovery & Innovation that will push the boundaries of cancer treatments by harnessing cutting-edge cell therapies, developing treatments that are more targeted, personalized and effective than ever before.

 

UT System Promise Plus

The UT System’s Promise Plus program was supercharged with a $35 million boost to UT academic institutions that will allow Texas undergraduate students with a combined family income below $100,000 to benefit from no-cost tuition and mandatory fees while earning their bachelor’s degree from a UT academic institution.

UT Austin

UT Austin continued to set new standards, shattering its previous record for freshman applications for the third consecutive year on the heels of previously announcing $1.04B in research expenditures in FY23 earlier in the year.
