UT System Brain Summit covered by KUT Austin

AUSTIN - Texas - KUT Austin's Seema Mathur covered the UT System's Brain Research Summit which took place Monday, Nov. 7 - Tuesday, Nov. 8, featuring doctors, professors, researchers and numerous leaders in brain health from across UT institutions. The full audio segment and transcript are below.

Seema Mathur, KUT: Some of the brightest people within the entire UT health system are putting their heads together to figure out how to help Texans suffering from problems related to the brain, including diseases that affect memory mental health and traumatic brain injuries. Neurologist Dr. Louise McCullough (UT Health Houston) says science is connecting the dots like never before: “The brain is not an isolated organ, so I think we’re taking a step back from looking just at the brain but looking at the brain body and how the brain controls the immune system and how the immune system controls the brain.” For instance, our gut health is connected to brain health. Blood tests can now predict some brain diseases well before symptoms start. There are so many advances still working their way from research labs to people. The goals at this summit are to provide equitable research, collaboration and private innovation to help doctors push those treatments forward.
