Statement from Chancellor Cigarroa regarding Fisher v. The University of Texas

Please see the following statement from The University of Texas System Chancellor Francisco G. Cigarroa, M.D., regarding today’s decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit in the case of Fisher v. The University of Texas. The case relates to the use of race and ethnicity as one of many factors in determining college admissions. The Supreme Court issued its opinion in 2013, sending the case back to the lower court to take a closer look at UT Austin’s admissions policy to ensure it followed the standards laid out in Grutter v. Bollinger, a landmark decision that gave public universities the ability to use race as one of multiple factors in determining admissions.

“We are pleased that the United States Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals has affirmed the findings of the district court to uphold The University of Texas at Austin’s holistic admissions process,” Chancellor Cigarroa said. “The University of Texas System is committed to maintaining policies that sustain a diverse student population on UT campuses and we respect and appreciate the careful deliberation on this matter.”
