Kickoff meeting held in first step to consolidate UTB and UTPA academic programs for new Valley institution

The Academic Program Working Groups for Project South Texas held a kickoff meeting, Friday, Oct. 4, at The University of Texas-Pan American in Edinburg.

Around 150 individuals, including 120 faculty members from UT Brownsville and UT Pan American, participated. Thirteen academic program working groups will be tasked with considering how the various disciplines should be represented in the new UT university. Each working group has equal faculty representation from UTB and UTPA and is charged with making recommendations on the types of academic programs the new university will offer when it begins in Fall 2015.

“I was very pleased to see the enthusiasm and anticipation of the participating faculty. It is clear they realize the magnitude and the importance of the task ahead. I am confident that these working groups are going to recommend innovative and challenging programs for the new university that will be in tune with the fast-changing environment of the 21st century,” said Julio León, who is serving as a special advisor for Project South Texas and leading the transition team in charge of consolidating UT Brownsville and UTPA.
