Henrich Named President of UT Health Science Center at San Antonio

AUSTIN – The Board of Regents of The University of Texas System appointed William L. Henrich, M.D., as president of the UT Health Science Center at San Antonio.

Henrich has been serving as the institution’s interim president since February and was named the sole finalist for the position last month. Previously, he served as vice president for medical affairs and dean of the Health Science Center's School of Medicine. He also holds the John P. Howe, III, M.D. Distinguished Chair in Health Policy.

“Dr. Henrich is a proven leader with exemplary academic credentials and a demonstrated ability to advance excellence at the Health Science Center, which is a critical component of the South Texas Medical Center and a crucial economic engine for San Antonio and all of Texas,” said Regents’ Vice Chairman Colleen McHugh. McHugh also chairs the Board’s Health Affairs Committee. “The Board is confident that Dr. Henrich will provide strong guidance to support and expand health professional education, patient care and research activities in the Rio Grande Valley and in Laredo.”

Dr. Henrich succeeds Francisco G. Cigarroa, M.D., who was officially named chancellor of the UT System in January.

“I am delighted that Bill Henrich has been named president of the Health Science Center,” UT System Chancellor Francisco Cigarroa, M.D., said. “Bill and I have worked together for years. He is an outstanding individual who will devote himself to continuing the upward trajectory of this wonderful comprehensive academic health center that I care so deeply about. He is sensitive to the needs of South Texas and addressing health care disparities and I am confident in his leadership abilities. I look forward to working with Bill in this new capacity.”

"We are grateful to the members of the advisory committee for the outstanding job they did in reviewing a remarkable list of nominees and applicants and narrowing the field to a leader who is so outstanding in health and administration,” said Dr. Kenneth I. Shine, executive vice chancellor for health affairs.

Prior to joining the health science center, Henrich was chair of medicine and held an endowed professorship at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore. He also was physician-in-chief at the University of Maryland Medical Center.  Henrich held many positions at UT Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, including professor of internal medicine, associate chief of staff for research and development at the VA Medical Center in Dallas and attending physician at Zale Lipshy University Hospital.  He is the author of more than 200 scientific publications. Henrich received his undergraduate degree at Columbia College and his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine. He completed a residency in internal medicine at the University of Oregon Medical School and a fellowship in nephrology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.
