AUSTIN – A senior administrator at Yale-New Haven Health System has been named the new system-wide compliance officer for The University of Texas System.

Larry Plutko, currently the corporate compliance and privacy officer and system director for the Connecticut-based hospital system, was named to the new position today (July 25) by UT System Chancellor ad interim Dr. Kenneth I. Shine.  His start date will be September 29.

“We are delighted that Larry has agreed to serve as our new system-wide compliance officer,” said Shine.  “He brings to this position a proven record in managing large corporate compliance programs.  Compliance with federal and state laws and with UT System policies and procedures is a high priority and we believe that Larry will do an outstanding job making these understandable to our employees and helping our institutions improve compliance with them.”

The system-wide compliance officer will collaborate with colleagues at UT institutions.  In this role, Plutko will provide the institutional compliance programs with compliance-related training and information and will make sure effective systems are in place for the appropriate monitoring and auditing of campus operations.

The position will report directly to the chancellor of the UT System and the UT System Board of Regents’ Audit, Compliance and Management Review Committee.

Previously, Plutko was the chief compliance and ethics officer for Providence Health & Services, a multi-state health care system with 27 acute care hospitals and 35 health care facilities in Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Montana and California.

Plutko earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Mount St. Mary’s University and completed postgraduate work in philosophy and ethics at Harvard University, Columbia University and Georgetown University.  He served as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and the University of Washington School of Medicine, and taught business ethics at the Graduate School of Business, Duquesne University.

Plutko received Compliance Officer Certification at the Harvard University School of Public Health in 1998 and is a member of the Health Care Compliance Association, Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics, Association of American Medical Colleges, and American Health Lawyers Association.
