“One of Texas’ most important regions will soon have a new university of the 21st Century with a global mission serving 30,000 students, as well as a medical school with associated residency programs. This new university will be the second-largest Hispanic-serving institution in America in terms of enrollment. It will also be eligible for Permanent University Funds previously unavailable to UT Brownsville or UT Pan American.

AUSTIN – The University of Texas System Board of Regents today authorized the completion of negotiations for a lease between The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College that would help ease the transition as the two institutions begin the separation process after two decades of sharing a campus, resources and programs.

The Texas House of Representatives today unanimously approved House Bill 1000, which authorizes the creation of a new University of Texas institution in South Texas.
The initiative would include the University of Texas at Brownsville and the University of Texas Pan-American and would create a new medical school to serve South Texas and the Rio Grande Valley.

In his State of the State address before a joint session of the 83rd Texas Legislature today, Governor Rick Perry called for the Legislature to pass a bill giving South Texas access to Permanent University Funds – a vision that The University of Texas System leaders are working hard to make a reality.
“This area of the state is critical to our state’s future,” Perry said in his speech. “And our investments in the children of South Texas will return to us a thousandfold.”

AUSTIN – The University of Texas System Board of Regents today unanimously approved an initiative to authorize Chancellor Francisco G. Cigarroa to work with the Texas Legislature to establish a new university that includes the University of Texas at Brownsville, the University of Texas-Pan American and the future South Texas School of Medicine.
The plan would result in a single institution that spans the entire Rio Grande Valley, with a presence in each of the major metropolitan areas of Brownsville, Edinburg, Harlingen and McAllen.
