EDINBURG – Medical, academic and community leaders from throughout South Texas gathered Tuesday morning for a groundbreaking ceremony for the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Medical Academic Building, the first new construction for the UTRGV School of Medicine.

Medical, academic and community leaders from The University of Texas System and across South Texas will gather at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26 for a groundbreaking ceremony for the new UT Rio Grande Valley Medical Academic Building.

The groundbreaking ceremony will be held in the Music Building on the UT Pan American campus at 1201 West University Drive in Edinburg.

UT Regents Approve Academic Structure of UTRGV

The University of Texas Board of Regents Thursday approved the academic structure of the new UT Rio Grande Valley, taking an essential step forward in making the new university and medical school a reality. The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board has also approved the structure.

UTRGV President Guy Bailey proposed the 11 colleges and schools that will form the academic foundation for the new institution, including an Honors College and a Graduate College that will offer advanced degrees and create more opportunities for research.

Friends,

I am pleased to be in the Valley at this important time for this new institution.  As we look forward to welcoming UTRGV’s first students in Fall 2015, I want to share with you some key events that are shaping UTRGV right now and will shape it further in the next few months.

For instance, we can now better project the timelines for hiring the founding faculty and staff at UTRGV.  Officially, these dates are tentative because the hiring process is fluid, but it is my goal to stick as close to these timelines as possible.
