Regents approval of PUF for South Texas garners widespread media coverage

More than 20 news media outlets from across the state ran stories about The University of Texas System Board of Regents’ unanimous decision to send $196 million from the Permanent University Fund to South Texas.

The PUF funding will construct new facilities in Cameron and Hidalgo counties as part of the UT System initiative to establish a new university and medical school in the Rio Grande Valley. The Regents’ vote is historic because it marks the first time PUF money will go to South Texas.

The university is expected to enroll its first class in fall 2015, and a campaign is under way to seek community input on the new name for the institution.
