AUSTIN – The University of Texas System issued the following statement today (Jan. 15) regarding Austin City Council's resolution on the Travis County Historical Commission’s application to the Texas Historical Commission for a historical marker at the Lion's Municipal Golf Course located on the university-owned Brackenridge Tract.

The UT System acknowledges that integration of one of two Austin public golf courses in 1951 is an historic event for the City of Austin and worthy of recognition. We will study ways to commemorate this event and other important desegregation and civil rights events in the history of Austin and The University of Texas at Austin as the master planning process continues and redevelopment of the golf course is considered. We believe that it is not only possible but also necessary to both honor the past and plan for the future.
