Yudof to visit high school in Brownsville

University of Texas System Chancellor Mark G. Yudof will visit with district and school administrators and counselors in Brownsville, Texas, on Monday, February 2, 2004. Yudof will discuss the UT System's commitment to affordable higher education and its policies that no student will be denied educational opportunity because of financial need.

The meeting will take place at the Gladys Porter High School , 3500 International Blvd. , beginning at 2:00 p.m.

Also joining Yudof will be Regent Robert Estrada, a Brownsville native currently residing in Dallas, and other System officials. After his remarks, Yudof will post the System's first “We've Got You Covered” poster in the hallway of the high school. The posters are part of a statewide communication effort on financial assistance for students at UT System campuses. UT System officials will be available for questions from the news media immediately following the meeting.

The Gladys Porter High School is the engineering and technology magnet school within the Brownsville Independent School District. The school participates in the “Project Grad” program -- a comprehensive, cost-effective nonprofit school reform model that is currently underway in ten school districts nationally – whose goal is to ensure that at least 80 percent of students graduate from the high school and that 50 percent enter college. “Project Grad” combines specific evidence-based curricular and student and family service components into a coherent educational experience for students and staff.

The UT System has 15 campuses, including nine academic and six health institutions, an enrollment exceeding 170,000 students, more than 80,000 employees, and an annual operating budget of $7.8 billion.
