For the third year in a row, The University of Texas-Pan American won first place at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo’s Mariachi Invitational, defeating six professional mariachi groups from Texas that were invited to compete.The Mariachi Aztlán received a trophy and $7,500 in prize money on March 9. More than 75,000 audience members were in attendance.
"It was very challenging but the students were great," said Dahlia Guerra, Ph.D., dean of UTPA's College of Arts and Humanities and founder of UTPA's mariachi program.
The group has gained national attention, performing twice for President Barack Obama in Washington, D.C., and is led by Musical Director Francisco Loera from UTPA's departments of modern languages and literature and music and dance.
