Breanda's Story

A few years down the road, Breanda Williams may be telling you to open wide so she can fix your teeth.

A strong Biology Department and proximity to her family in Dallas led the aspiring dentist to UT Arlington in Fall 2005. After graduating fourth in a class of 370 at Carter High School, she was confident she could succeed academically in college.

What she wasn’t so sure about was finding the money necessary to pursue a bachelor’s degree. “Being one of four children from a single-parent household, I was really dependent on financial aid,” she said.

As a UT Arlington Maverick, she found a combination of grants and loans that are covering the costs of tuition, fees and books. With the money she earns from her work-study job in the financial aid office, she pays for her on-campus apartment and other living expenses.

Neither Breanda nor her sister, a UT Arlington senior, could have afforded college without financial assistance. Her sister graduates this spring, and Breanda expects to graduate four and a half years from when she started.

Then, if all goes as planned, it’s off to dental school and on to her dream career.
