Jerry's Story

Jerry Massey wanted to stay close to home while earning a prestigious degree, and UT Tyler offered him that opportunity.

“I could stay here with my family, and I generally like this region. After looking into UT Tyler’s business program, it offered everything I wanted, so I decided to stay close to home,” said the freshman business management major, who hails from Whitehouse High School, just outside of Tyler.

Financial aid played an important role in J.J.’s ability to pursue a college degree. His father is a disabled veteran who is a part-time postal worker and his stepmother, who also works part time, stays home to care for his 4-year-old twin brothers.

“I live with my parents, but I basically am responsible for my own expenses. The amount of grant money I received in financial aid covered everything I needed plus more, which in the end helped me out a lot,” he said.

J.J. works at a local restaurant to help cover additional expenses.
