Gloria's Story

Coming from a single-parent household in Texas’ southernmost city – among the poorest in the nation – made affording a higher education seem difficult for Gloria Y. Garcia.

Her mother’s earnings as a university professor in nearby Mexico weren’t sufficient for her to cover tuition. But she found that help was available to bring her dreams to fruition.

“Financial assistance has diminished this barrier by providing me with different awards.  Therefore, I have searched for other sources to finance my education such as scholarships,” Garcia said.

A Pell Grant and a 3.97 GPA enabled her to earn different scholarships, which represent a significant portion of her financial aid.

UTB/TSC’s financial aid office also offered Gloria more than just help paying for college. Her adviser referred her to an internship program with the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities, and last summer she worked for the U.S. Department of Transportation under a division with the Federal Aviation Administration in Washington, D.C.

Because of her financial assistance and her position in the financial aid office as a lead mentor – assisting high school students planning their college education -- Gloria will owe less than $8,000 for her college education and will have an opportunity for the successful future she has always dreamed of.

“My financial aid office has provided me with funds and opportunities to build a brighter professional future,” she said.
