Student Learning Assessment

UT Brownsville Physics Students

The purpose of this web page is to promote thoughtful, effective approaches to student learning assessment that involve faculty, benefit students, and improve the quality of teaching and learning throughout the academic institutions of The University of Texas System. We hope to help campuses, academic programs, and administrators to plan, implement, and share the results of their assessment efforts by publishing, networking, and sponsoring activities related to student learning assessment.

Our view of assessment is simple and captured in the following statement:

"Assessment involves making our expectations explicit and public, setting appropriate criteria and high expectations for learning quality; systematically gathering, analyzing, and interpreting evidence to determine how well performance matches those expectations and standards; and using resulting information to document, explain and improve performance"
(T. Angelo, AAHE Bulletin, Nov. 1995, pp 7-9).

In summary, we view student learning assessment as a tool for program planning and quality improvement AND as a tool for accountability reporting.
